What is a merit-based scholarship?

A merit-based scholarship is awarded on the basis of a student's achievements, talents or potential rather than their financial situation. The merit in question may be academic, but it can equally be excellence in sport, the arts, leadership or another field a funder wishes to reward.

The defining principle is that the award follows accomplishment or promise. A funder offering merit scholarships is choosing to recognise and encourage a particular kind of excellence, and selection turns on how strongly a candidate demonstrates it.

How is it different from a need-based scholarship?

Merit-based and need-based scholarships answer different questions. A merit award asks how strong or promising a candidate is; a need-based award asks how much financial support a candidate requires. One is about accomplishment, the other about circumstance.

The two are not mutually exclusive. Many programs blend them, using merit to identify strong candidates and need to prioritise among them, but keeping the distinction clear matters, because it determines what evidence a program collects and how it judges applicants.
